Setting Goals

Did you know only 8% of people who set New Year’s resolutions actually achieve their goal?

Setting a proper goal is just as important as a plan to accomplish that goal. This is because setting the right kind of goal will help to ensure a successful outcome; but what is the right kind of goal? The best kinds of goals are specific, and outline exactly what you want to accomplish.

Saying you’re going to “eat healthier” is a vague statement. Setting a goal of eating two servings of fruit per day is a specific target you can work towards. A proper goal should also be timely, meaning you have a specific time frame in which you want this to be accomplished. That being said, it’s important to have both long-term and short-term goals that act as pit stops on your road to victory.

A proper goal is also realistic. For example, it might not be realistic to set a weight loss goal of 40 lbs. in 2 months. Creating unrealistic goals potentially sets you up for failure. Creating a goal of losing 40 lbs. in 5 or 6 months is much more realistic and therefore creates a better chance at success!

Your goals should be self-determined; this will help provide longer-lasting intrinsic motivation. It is important that you choose and embrace your goals based on your own values, not based on someone else’s opinion. When you truly care about achieving your goals, you become much more invested in the process. Keep in mind your goal doesn’t need to be outcome driven, it can also be a performance goal. Maybe you want to walk three days a week for an hour or run a mile at a faster speed. Whatever your goal is, make it count. Reaching goals isn’t easy, but it’s always worth it!

Grocery Shopping & Strategies for Success

One of the best ways to ensure your success is to plan for it!

Planning meals and snacks ahead of time is a great way to provide yourself with healthy options throughout the week. When you hit the grocery store it is very useful to come prepared with a pre-written grocery list. This may seem like a no-brainer, but so often we find ourselves popping into the store whenever it’s convenient and we may not be prepared. If you find this happening to you, take a moment before heading into the store to make a quick list. An easy way to build this list is thinking about what meals you will have this coming week. Selecting recipes ahead of time is also helpful and can benefit you by avoiding letting certain foods go bad. When organizing your list you can do it by recipe or by food groups, such as vegetables, fruits, proteins etc.

If you are tight for time and are in a rush, remember that whole-foods (non-processed) are usually located at the perimeter of the store. Whole-foods or single ingredient foods like apples, cucumbers, chicken and fish are always going to be your healthiest options compared to processed foods. However, this doesn’t mean every single-ingredient item is low calorie; avocados can be up to 350 calories for one piece and other high-fat foods such as nuts and olives tend to be high in calories as well. These food items are still healthy and contain good healthy fats but this is something to keep in mind when shopping and eating.

If possible, avoid shopping at busy times of the day and never shop when you are hungry! This can lead to poor choices and over-shopping. If you find yourself making lots of impulse buys at the store it may be beneficial to have a snack before you go. It is always easier to say no to a certain food at the store once than many times throughout the week at home. When you plan ahead you have a much greater chance for success, so set yourself up right and gather your supplies. So often we gravitate towards the convenient option, if you have healthy options on hand it will be natural to gravitate towards them!
